Preparing for Life in the 21st Century: A Toolkit for Students

You are welcome to join us via wechat or email us.

Saturday 5.29, 7pm-8pm, 周六5月29日 7点开讲

The sessions would explore the unique challenges facing young students in contemporary society. With the help of philosophy, literature and history it would teach them how to understand and critically assess these issues, and ultimately equip them with the toolkit necessary to successfully deal with them. Topics covered would be far-reaching, and could include such matters as the value of happiness, the importance of failure, and the issues with social-media.

The first lesson will analyse the topic of failure. In particular, it will question contemporary society’s attitudes towards failure and consider whether these are really either healthy or productive. In order to answer this, the lesson will undertake a survey of the history of attitudes towards failure – covering everything from Greek philosophy to Roman history to Shakespearian tragedy, and much more – and then compare these attitudes with our own contemporary ones. The lesson will then conclude with an attempt to define a good attitude towards failure from these historical lessons, and suggest some tips for how students can cultivate such an attitude.
